History
Finally I got around to installing Linux. I chose to install The KDE version of Ubuntu - Kubuntu, as some Linuxguy told me KDE was easier to tweak than GNOME (which is what regular Ubuntu uses), and I am a tweaker :-)
Update: I have now also installed linux at my home computer! After using Kubuntu for quite a while at work, I decided to instead install Ubuntu at home. A couple of reason for installing Ubuntu:
- Appearance - Ubuntu uses GNOME as window manager, which in my opinion has a nicer look
- More users - makes it probably easier to find help online when problems occur.
- To improve my knowledge on the differences between Kubuntu and Ubuntu.
Update 2: Finally I made the decision to throw out GNOME at home and start using KDE there as well. So now it's Kubuntu both at home and at work. There were mainly two reason for choosing KDE over GNOME:
- The superior tweaking capabilities
- The way most KDE apps are integrated with each other
Update 3: The final step has been taken! Now the laptop has suited up to Linux as well! For this I chose a totally different distribution, Sabayon! It's Gentoo based and it comes with Beryl. Sounds good and all, right? But seems like a lot of work to get it running. The happy news is, it worked like a charm from the start! Wireless worked out of the box, no hassle. Graphics drivers available from Intel's website. I still kept a partition with Windows though, I still have to find a good video editor and a way to add music to my cell phone before removing Windows completely.
Update 4: Sabayon was pretty neat with a working wireless and all. The problem was that I never got suspend and hibernate to work, which is kind of crucial on a laptop. This time I tried Kubuntu 7.04 - Feisty Fawn on the laptop, and it looks promising so far! Suspend and hibernate is working fine, and wireless works as well. So now it's Kubuntu everywhere!
Update 5: Changed job. A new computer and too much Microsoft dependent work to be able to leave Windows. So on the new laptop I am running WinXP primarily, but I also have Kubuntu installed. The HP 6510b isn't completely Linux friendly though, or should I say Kubuntu isn't completely HP 6510b friendly. Hibernate/suspend works so-so, and if I close the lid while running Linux everything hangs and I have to hold the power button to restart <= FIXED!. While installing Kubuntu I created a check list that is recommended to follow when installing a fresh Kubuntu on any computer.
Update 6: Bought a new computer that will be used as a HTPC. I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on it and my plan is to run XBMC on it.
Update 7: Installed 9.04 on HTPC.
Update 8: Installed 9.10 on server (KDE) and laptop (Gnome).
